Not so long ago, right after the European Football Champion, Leonid Slutsky gave, as it seems to me, an incredible frank and deep interview. In it, he assessed the team’s performance and explained the reasons for the failure. Here's how he responded to the question of why the team's game lacked character:
Because these things are shaped by the environment. You can’t lie on the couch for days and then come out and say: now I’ll show character! It's a daily struggle for a place in the main lineup. It's a daily struggle through training to get on the football field. This is the highest level of competition in clubs. These are games at the highest level of tension that you should play every week, or better yet, twice. Unfortunately this doesn't happen

Almost any miracles in terms of implementation, creative ideas, technical solutions are the result of fierce competition. The desire to do better, faster and higher. The desire not to lose, to gain, to increase and multiply. The desire to survive. And it’s not a matter of a conscious reluctance to do well when there is no competition. The fact is that in this case you have a different level of motivation. Some things cannot be simulated. And one of them is competition. You run faster when your competitors are running on adjacent tracks. You make better offers if you know that several other teams are making them at the same time. No national projects change the world as quickly as competition. No decrees, friendship or family ties. Every fair tender moves the market forward. All the rest hinder its development.
